Hill College is hosting its 13th annual Boots and Suits Gala, 6 p.m., Friday, April 20, at the Cleburne Conference Center. In addition, Hill College will honor Betty and Will Lowrance with the Pillar of the Community Award for Hillsboro. The award recognizes those who have helped build and sustain Hill and Johnson counties and supported the growth of Hill College throughout Hillsboro, Cleburne and Burleson areas.

As a team, Will and Betty Lowrance have been an active part of the Hillsboro/Hill County Community for over 30 years, and both have been blessed with multiple leadership roles that have touched many lives and institutions in the area. Betty was an English teacher at Dallas, Garland and Hillsboro ISDs from 1964-87 and a Hill College English instructor from 1987-2000. She was named Texas Teacher of the Year by the Association of Texas Professional Educators in 1979. Will taught American history and government in Austin and Dallas, and began a career in school administration at Skyline High School in 1971. He served as the principal of Dallas Christian Academy for seven years, and returned to Hillsboro as principal of the Hillsboro Junior High School in 1985. In 1992, he joined the Education Service Center in Waco, and fully retired in 2006.

Will was elected to the Hillsboro City Council in 1999, and served as the mayor of Hillsboro from 2001-2006. During this time, Will led the City Council initiative to establish community action teams and led in the planning to make Historic City Hall the home to council chamber, to provide offices for main street and economic development and to provide a public venue available to the community.

The Lowrances are currently active in Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Waco and helped launch the “Around the Table” Bible study series on Thursdays at El Conquistador in Hillsboro. They are the parents of Fred Andrew Lowrance, and have three grandchildren.

The Boots and Suits Gala will feature a live and silent auction, hors d'oeuvres provided by the Cleburne ISD culinary department, dinner by Flores BBQ of Whitney, bar service by West End Grill of Cleburne, dancing and live entertainment. This night of celebrating higher education and philanthropy will benefit the Hill College Testing Centers, the softball team and district-wide student scholarships for the coming academic year. Howard Dudley of Cleburne and Lorri Dyess of Burleson will also be honored as 2018 Pillars of the Community.

Community support of the Boots and Suits Gala allows Hill College to strengthen its ability to lead students toward success. Each year, Hill College serves over 6,000 students as they each make the choice to advance their education through one of our academic, technical or continuing education programs.

Individual tickets to the Hill College Boots and Suits Gala are $75 per person, while tables start at $600.
